Exercise 1

The second note of these melodic phrases is ‘off beat’. This works well in Latin feels as well. (And in some Latin feels the fourth beat is emphasized instead of – and often replacing – the first of the next bar.)

Exercise 2

An exercise to get a feel for the duration of four bars. A good feel for this is very important because most jazz standards have structures that are based on four bar units. Like 8-8-8-8 for example in most AABA structures.

Exercise 3

Try to count or tap the quarter notes while singing this exercise!

Exercise 4

Similar rhythmic patterns in bar one and three create logic. A pattern. That can then be broken to draw attention!

Exercise 5

An exercise to open your ears to specific colors that are often used in jazz. Like the 7 and 9.
