Exercise 1

Long notes with lots of color. That’s because they’re not chord tones (the notes of the chord) but they are from a scale that fits the chord.

Exercise 2

Same principle as above, only this time two different colors. These colorful notes (not chord tones, but additions like 9,11,13) sound great on Bossa Novas.

Exercise 3

Straight eighth notes this time, unlike the swing feel of most of the other exercises. However, whether you emphasize some of them or sing them all equal makes a lot of difference. Try emphasizing different notes to get a feel for this. Play time!

Exercise 4

Ok, some of the notes in this exercise may be too high or too low for you. Try switching to another octave if you can. If not, don’t force yourself to sing notes beyond your vocal range.

Exercise 5

Short rests for you to breathe. Don’t sing too loud. Keep it light. It’s Bossa Nova!
