Exercise 1

Long harmonically important notes. To get a feel for changes in the sequence of chords (also known as ‘chord progression’).

Exercise 2

Mainly an exercise of 7’s and 3’s. Harmonically important notes and a good way of getting a feel for the chords.

Exercise 3

Broken chords (arpeggios, the seperate chord tones) are an excellent basis for melodic phrases and a precise indication of the changing chords. Great for developing your musical hearing.

Exercise 4

Added connections leave little time for breathing. Breath in logical places, like the end of melodic phrases. For example in this exercise at the end of each four bar row.

Exercise 5

Added a chromatic connection in the last bar of each row. In chromatic sequences the tensions of ‘right and wrong’ notes are alternated. That’s what most people prefer. The alternating of tension and release of tension; like waves.
