Training programs
The exercises in the training programs are a shortcut to singing jazz easier. Instead of taking years to learn loads of songs and their lyrics and training all skills as a side-effect, the exercises stimulate their development right away.
Skills like effective and efficient breathing.
Accurate timing.
Accurate singing and pitching of all of the intervals.
A feel for different kinds of phrasing and rhythmic patterns.
A feel for making variations and improvisations.
Developing the ability to switch between octaves when lines go out of your comfortable vocal range.
Etcetera.
Do these exercises regularly and you will boost all these skills.
Once you feel you’ve mastered an exercise, start making variations on them. Or challenge yourself to sing them on just one breath, or extremely legato (fluent), or on vowels only, or an octave up or down for example.
Remember
There are iRealPro files of every (relevant!) exercise if you want to change key, feel or tempo! Or… try variations on the exercises. Or… try improvising your own melodies on the chords.
