Exercise 1

Just like you can place the first beat (quarter note) early, you can do so with the third beat of a 4/4 time signature (4 quarter notes in one measure/bar) as well.

Exercise 2

Chromatic connections upwards work just as well. And you can bend them upwards as well. There’s much tension which is then resolved.

Exercise 3

Why not go upwards and back again? Diversity is key in keeping audience engaged. And this means diversity in every imaginable way. Direction of melodic lines, rhythm, volume, you name it.

Exercise 4

Lots of semitone distances in this one. Again, you can bend notes towards each other as well!

Exercise 5

The last two bars with their quarter notes triplets and hip notes (the middle ones of the triplets are 13’s, really colorful) are challenging!
