By now you may have been performing. You’re not only rewarded by that great experience itself, but there’s much to gain from your performance afterward as well.

The moments after you’ve just sung can be energetic and joyful – enjoy that feeling! It’s the greatest feeling on earth, isn’t it?

Then again, you may be filled with doubts about what you’ve just done. You may find yourself responding to people in the audience, saying you can do better than this. You may feel some disappointment because you missed that high note, or you didn’t feel as relaxed as you wanted. You may feel that the moments on stage passed by too quickly.

How can you help yourself?

My number one advice: record yourself on video or audio – this feedback is worth millions! You will see what your audience has seen, and you will hear what your audience has heard. You will most probably see that what you thought went terribly wrong, wasn’t such a catastrophe after all. And you might see that what you thought went extremely wonderful, was quite alright, but maybe not as good as you thought it was. Darn. Keep on trying!

Use your video or audio recording to reflect on what was great, what was good and what can be done better, so you will give yourself an opportunity to grow as a singer, as a performer. Buy a nice notebook for that, or make notes in a document on your computer.

Assignment

If you haven’t performed yet, you really should try. Don’t worry about making a fool out of yourself.

Even the greats had to start somewhere, even when they weren’t that great yet. How else can one learn to perform?

If performing is still too scary, perform in your living room, for example with the iRealPro app, or sing along with an album, and record it.

Either way; write down all things that went really well during your performance, and things you’d like to work on.
