Exercise 1

Long notes. You can use them when improvising. Never forget there’s music being played by the other musicians as well. Plenty to listen to. Try extending the note from bar 1 to bar 2, it’s the same note anyway. Notice how much the value of a note changes when the chord changes? That’s why repeating notes isn’t such a bad idea when your out of ideas!

Exercise 2

Rhythms can be simple yet interesting when they create an unequal division of a bar.

Exercise 3

Another variation on the ‘theme’. Small changes can make a huge difference. The same goes when you’re singing the melody of a song.

Exercise 4

It may take some getting used to the sound of the alterated chord in the last bar (G7alt.). First time I heard that sound it just felt ‘wrong’. But you’ll get used to it :)

Exercise 5

The melody in the last bar is actually part of a whole tone scale (two semitones between each note of the sequence). Tricky for singers.
